Course Description:
This course introduces maritime professionals to the cultural dynamics that shape communication, teamwork, and safety onboard. It provides practical strategies to recognize, prevent, and manage cultural misunderstandings in a diverse crew environment.
Learning objectives:
At the end of the training course the participant shall:
· Describe what culture is and how visible and invisible cultural factors influence communication and behavior onboard.
· Explain how cultural differences—such as communication styles, hierarchy, body language, and work habits—can lead to misunderstandings in a multicultural crew.
· Identify early signs of cultural conflict and the common sources from which these conflicts arise onboard.
· Apply effective communication and conflict-management strategies—such as clarifying questions, respectful language, and mediation—to reduce cultural misunderstandings in shipboard operations.
