Communicable Disease Prevention and Response Onboard – Basic Training for Crew.

This training module has been developed in compliance with the requirements of the 3rd Edition of the European Manual for Hygiene Standards and Communicable Disease Surveillance on Passenger Ships, Chapter 2.0 – Communicable Disease Surveillance.

Communicable disease prevention onboard relies on the active participation of every crew member. Early recognition of illness, proper hygiene practices, and prompt reporting of symptoms all play an important role in protecting the health of passengers and fellow crew.

In this module, you will learn about the common communicable illnesses that may occur onboard passenger ships, how these diseases can spread in shared environments, and the practical steps you can take to help prevent transmission.

You will also learn when and how to report illness, the importance of personal hygiene and handwashing, how environmental cleaning and disinfection reduce contamination, and how personal protective equipment may be used during certain tasks.

Finally, this module will introduce the ship’s Outbreak Prevention and Response Plan, including how response levels guide the ship’s infection control measures during increased health risks.

By understanding these principles and following established procedures, every crew member contributes to maintaining a safe and healthy environment onboard.
