Training required for:
This training is designed for deck officers, navigators, and bridge crew serving on vessels operating in polar regions.
Course Description:
Passage Planning in Ice Conditions is an advanced training course designed for marine officers responsible for safe navigation in polar and ice-affected waters. The course provides a comprehensive understanding of ice types, environmental hazards, and operational risks associated with high-latitude navigation. Learners will gain proficiency in interpreting ice charts (Egg and Colour Coding), preparing and executing ice navigation plans, and assessing vessel and crew readiness in accordance with SOLAS, STCW, and the Polar Code.
Learning objectives:
At the end of the training course the participant shall:
· Identify types of ice (e.g., fast ice, pack ice, icebergs) and their characteristics.
· Explain navigational hazards and environmental challenges in polar waters.
· Use ice charts using Egg and Colour coding systems.
· Evaluate the operational readiness of the vessel and crew for ice navigation. (Evaluate)
Create an alternative route plan considering ice conditions, vessel capabilities, and external factors.
