Course Description:

  Marine Environmental Awareness – The Diverse Environment is a comprehensive eLearning course designed to enhance maritime professionals’ understanding of the marine environment and their responsibilities in protecting it. Aligned with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Model Course 1.38, the course explores the global significance of the oceans, the environmental impacts of shipping, international regulations such as the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL), and best practices for sustainable maritime operations. Through real-life case studies, interactive scenarios, and regional examples like the Mediterranean Sea, learners will develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to contribute effectively to marine environmental protection. The course is suitable for seafarers, cadets, and shore-based personnel at all levels.

 

Training audience:

All shipboard personnel of all ranks and departments, as well as shore-based staff involved in ship operations and environmental compliance.

Learning objectives:

At the end of the training course the participant shall:

·        Understand the global importance of oceans and describe how shipping activities impact marine ecosystems.

·        Identify key international environmental regulations (e.g., MARPOL, Ballast Water Management Convention) and their application onboard.

·        Apply best practices for pollution prevention and resource conservation in daily shipboard operations.

·        Analyse real-life case studies and scenarios to evaluate causes and consequences of marine environmental incidents.

Demonstrate responsible decision-making and behaviours that support sustainable and compliant maritime practices.
