Course Overview

This course trains deck officers on the required competence as specified in the STCW Code to use the IMO Standard Marine Communication Phrases (SMCP) and use English in written and oral form when in charge of a navigational watch. The course presents an overview of the SMCP its background purpose and structure as well as the special communicative features governing the phrases. The course specifically addresses the phrases related to Specialized Maritime English requirements (delineated in Model Course 3.17) and trains participants on how to use the SMCP for: Ship-to-ship and ship-to-shore communication (messages related to ship’s safety routine and emergency communication). On-board communication (briefing on navigational aids cargo handling safety drills and fire fighting). The course comprises simulation-based activities and offers listening speaking writing and reading practice in order to enable trainees to gain the level of knowledge understanding and proficiency in the English language required by the STCW Code.
