Course Overview

Course Description: 

This e-learning course provides an in-depth understanding of the foundational principles and methodologies for assessing marine ecosystems and biodiversity. Students will explore the various tools, techniques, and frameworks used to evaluate the health, condition, and sustainability of marine environments. Emphasis is placed on practical assessment strategies used in marine conservation, fisheries management, and environmental monitoring. 

Target Audience:

The training should be undertaken by maritime professionals involved in assessment processes, including instructors, onboard Senior Officers responsible for evaluating crew competence and Marine Superintendents. 

Learning objectives: 

At the end of the training course the participant shall: 

  • Identify key roles and responsibilities of assessors, including instructors, examiners, supervisors, and onboard Senior officers. 
  • Describe the fundamental principles of fair, reliable, valid, and transparent assessment. 
  • Explain the difference between formative and summative assessments and their applications in maritime training. 
  • Execute clear and measurable assessment criteria to evaluate performance effectively. 
  • Apply standardised procedures to ensure fairness and consistency during assessments. 
  • Recognise common ethical dilemmas in assessment and apply strategies to address them.
