Course Description:
Navigating through storms is a critical skill for mariners, requiring a deep understanding of meteorological patterns and adept ship handling. Understanding how to use the ship’s characteristics, weather forecasting tools and Routing Services allow for strategic decision-making and a safer voyage through storm-prone waters.
Learning objectives:
By the end of this training, participants will be able to:
1. Understand the Fundamentals of Heavy Weather
· Identify the characteristics- causes of heavy weather conditions, including storms, cyclones, rogue waves.
2. Apply Effective Heavy Weather Navigation Techniques
· Demonstrate proper route planning to avoid or minimize exposure to severe weather.
· Utilize ship handling techniques, including speed adjustments a course alterations, to ensure vessel safety.
· Assess the risks of various sea conditions and their impact on ship stability and manoeuvrability.
3. Ensure Ship and Crew Safety During Heavy Weather
· Implement proper securing procedures for vessel, cargo, equipment and the crew.
· Follow best practices for crew and vessel safety, including preparation for emergency scenarios.
