Deck Officers and Cadets

   Course Description:

This course introduces deck officers and cadets to the different electronic chart types used in ECDIS, explaining how raster and vector charts are structured and applied in navigation. Learners gain a clear understanding of ENC usage bands, relevant IHO standards, and the limitations and capabilities of various electronic chart systems to support safe and compliant navigation.

   Learning objectives:

At the end of the training course the participant shall:

·        Define raster and vector data models.

·        Identify the main ECDIS chart types, including ENCs and RNCs.

·        List the ENC usage bands (Overview, General, Coastal, Approach, Harbour, Berthing).

·        Recall key IHO standards related to ENCs (S-57, S-52, S-63).

·        Identify different electronic chart systems: ECDIS, RCDS, ECS, and SENC
